After the European Council (EU) legislation of the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive, there is new trend set in the circuit board manufacturing. From times, the solder containing Lead has been used but now the manufacturers and suppliers have to use the solder free from the Lead.
This legislation has come after studying the harmfulness of the toxic Lead. The PCB manufacturers have been using the lead for many times. It has two disadvantages: one is that they are treated by human beings so they can produce harm to them, secondly the manufacturers dump the PCB circuit board into the earth without any treatment so they cause harm to the environment as well.
One of the disadvantages of using the Lead free solder are that absence of lead elevates the molten temperature of the solder. Now the user has to provide more temperature and heat energy to solder which in fact turns to be more dangerous to solder. In the old times, the combination of Lead (Pb) and Tin (Sn) are used in a calculated proportion. Now the components that make up a solder are Tin (Sn), Mercury (Hg), and Copper (Cu). Note that the Copper (Cu) and Mercury (Hg) percentage composition is very less used by the PCB manufacturers.
